The Taj, Cape Town

Located within the historic South African Reserve Bank building, The Taj Cape Town is the grandest hotel in the city centre, successfully combining the elegance of a bygone era with contemporary architecture. It is also well located, in the oldest precinct in the financial area of the city, opposite St George’s Cathedral, Slave Lodge and Company Gardens.

The wonderful historic aspect of this hotel is reflected in the façade, embellished with bronze, and even more impressive interiors, with the hotel lounge in the old banking hall under a vaulted ceiling.

Guests are accommodated in 176 well-appointed, exquisite rooms and suites, with all the mod cons, and a desk for business travellers. These are categorised as Heritage Rooms and Suites, Tower Rooms and Suites, The Presidential Suite and Taj Club.

An eclectic variety of cuisine and culinary experiences include an Indian specialty restaurant, a relaxed all-day dining restaurant and a Champagne, Guinness and Seafood bar. State of the art facilities include a full Jiva Grande Spa, a fitness centre and an indoor heated lap pool.

Susie suggests:

  • Take the complimentary city walking tour (departs Tuesday to Saturday at 10.30am) led by the hotel concierge, which takes in not only the city sights but its many restaurants, coffee shops, bars and shopping options close by.
  • Book a Heritage room (floors 2-6) which are more atmospheric, and don’t cost any more than Tower rooms. The latter have more panoramic views but lower ceilings and bland aluminium window/door fittings. Mountain views, regardless of location, are a bit more expensive.
