The estate is predominantly covered by indigenous fynbos and renosterboss. The Boontjiesrivier and five picturesque dams, which attracts an array of birds, and there are ostrich on site. Located just 3km from Montagu, on the scenic South African Route 62, it makes an ideal base for exploring the nearby Robertson Wine Valley, the Breede River, the Koo Valley and the Klein Karoo.
The hub of your stay at Galenia is the Estate House a barn renovated in a contemporary Cape Dutch design, with gable windows, a ceiling made of tree trunks and a verandah overlooking the estate. The sitting room is light and airy with a large fireplace; and a stylish dining area, with floor-to-ceiling windows, to enjoy the surrounding scenery. You can also soak in the views from the manicured garden and the swimming pool with sun loungers and a relaxing whirlpool bath.
Guests are accommodated in one of Galenia’s ten suites, double or twin semi-detached rooms set within five thatched cottages, each with its own covered stoep – Afrikaans for a verandah, with views over the estates’ olive grove and the Klein Karoo. A seating area features an open log fire, perfect for warming you up on cold winter evenings. It has all the mod-cons such as Wi-Fi, satellite TV, an electronic safe, a minibar and a tea and coffee station, and each bathroom has a free standing ‘claw-foot’ bathtub and an outdoor shower.
An early-morning guided nature walk, is an opportunity to find out more about the estate and its flora and fauna. On a recent visit, I was offered an ‘olive tasting’ session, which covered the manufacturing process of extra virgin olive oil from over a thousand trees. You can also purchase the end result!
