SALT Of Palmar
SALT Of Palmar
I would highly recommend this small boutique hotel on the east coast of Mauritius. Set on a white sandy beach, Salt of Palmar is the first eco hotel in Mauritius. It only has 59 rooms, and the service is highly professional and personalised.
As you arrive at SALT of Palmar, your eye takes you through an arch and leads you to the lagoon and reef, with a 25 metre lap pool in the foreground. If you want a good swim workout this pool is great. Equally the best pool is the Indian Ocean and you can have a good sea swim here. The reef is not too far away so you hear it, which is very soothing.
The top floor suites have a magnificent view of the turquoise lagoon and the beach. Each of the rooms is kitted out with only the finest of things. A handmade, king size Carpe Diem bed is developed with physios so you get the best night’s sleep, with 100% organic cotton bedding. There’s a yoga mat and block, a Roberts radio playing local séga music (instead of a TV), and even a refillable water bottle for days out of the hotel. The soft cotton bathrobe is made with coffee bean waste, there are comfortable bamboo slippers with a hint of cinnamon. A beautiful cosy bathroom has a rain shower and all-natural, locally produced toiletries.
The food is truly amazing. Fresh, local, healthy and homemade, the cooking is in an open kitchen so the guests can watch and interact with the chef, and there is a bakery full of tempting bread and pastries. If you want something special made, they will do it for you. An organic garden, with a vegetarian restaurant, is in the pipeline.
There are three bars, including a beach bar and pool bar. Unlike most hotels in Mauritius, SALT of Palmar actively encourages guests to mix with the locals and go out and to explore the island. You can hire a bike, take a dance or yoga class or be part of SALT’s skill swap program where you can share one of your skills with a local, learn a new one from a local or both. For spa goers, the delightful spa manager will personalize holistic treatments based on your needs. The therapists here are all excellent, and you can relax in a unique therapeutic salt room.
If you want to get away from it all, with good swimming, healthy food, great service, an excellent night’s sleep and a top spa experience, this is the spot.
