With 40 chalets blending into a lush tropical hillside overlooking one of the most picturesque bays on Mahé, this very pretty boutique hotel, is perfect for honeymooners. It’s a really good four star plus property, so a great option if you’re on a bit of a budget, and conveniently close to the airport.
Although smaller, and simpler, it reminds me of Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel in Mauritius Stepping into it, you’re struck by the feeling of total peace and tranquillity, and dramatic naturally beautiful setting, with incredible sea views. The beach is not only stunning and private, but safe, and good for sea swimming.
The simple, but modern and comfortable, open-plan Seychellois-style chalets, are lovely, with wooden decks and designed to accentuate the wild nature outside. There’s a sea view from every room and interiors reflect the colours of the sea. The chalets come in two categories, including 12 of the most affordable Ocean View Pool Chalets in the Seychelles. It’s worth going for this higher category for the extra space, private infinity pool and seclusion – especially the one at the end of the beach.
It’s a place you can sit for hours on your chalet balcony gazing at the iridescent blues and greens – with lush tropical greenery giving way to a picture-perfect white sand beach, with distinctive granite boulders, and the aquamarine sea. Carana Beach is owned by the Mason family who also run a travel agency on Mahé, so activities from hiking to boat trips and horseback rides can easily be arranged.
Food is delicious, and innovative, with fresh produce sourced from the Mason family organic farm on Denis Private Island. A beachside bar offers casual all day dining, on Creole-style tapas dishes, while a la carte dining is at Lorizon ( which means ‘the horizon’ in the local Creole language). All seats face the ocean, so wherever you sit, there’s a sea view. The team are also excellent, and very kind, and provide a high level of service, always with a smile.
Carana Beach was a winner in the World Luxury Hotel Awards in 2019, and is a perfect place for a wedding. It has a small spa, Sens, offering reasonably-priced beauty treatments, which you can enjoy in your chalet. It makes a good base to explore Mahé.
- Do a twin centre stay, starting with its sister property, Denis Private Island, and ending up at Carana Beach on your last night.
- Hire a mini moke for a couple of days and get out and explore the island of Mahé.
- Pack light clothing, good walking shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent (if hiking) for a visit.
