Top five spas in Mauritius

1/ Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa

This hotel in the beautiful south of Mauritius originated as Shanti Ananda from India. It was the first destination spa on the island, and is still one of the largest, with 25 treatment rooms. Here you can indulge in authentic spa treatments from around the world – Thai and Balinese massage for example, given by therapists from those countries – in a tropical garden, with soothing waterfalls. It also offers daily yoga, and meditation and pilates. An ayurvedic doctor can create a personalised spa journey, based on your body type and wellness goals, and a Wellness Chef prepares bespoke healthy meals for guests on full board.

2/ The Oberoi Beach Resort

This romantic thatched hotel in Turtle Bay Marine Park on the northwest coast is set in peaceful, private tropical gardens with earthen paths, primitive stone heads in the garden and a waterfall cascading into a pond. The beautiful award-winning spa under thatch has an Indian vibe, walls painted terracotta, ochre and deep yellow and flower decorations, and complimentary wellness classes. African-inspired therapies – are given by excellent therapists, in open air treatment rooms – including a couples suite with underfloor pools and vast spa suites, with a gazebo in a private garden for relaxing after a treatment.

3/ Shangri-La Le Touessrok

This iconic luxury five-star hotel on the east coast is one of my favourites. Sculptures and water features give a zen-like feel to its CHI Spa, which offers treatments, including Ayurveda massages, in stylish surrounds. It has free yoga sessions on offer, a life fitness gym and two couples’ outdoor treatment pavilions. The fantastic new spa manager, Marjorie Cesar, previously worked at La Prairie, and The Royal Palm. New treatments are from Biologique Recherche – natural, fragrance-free facials tailormade to your skin type.

4/ Constance Prince Maurice

Constance Prince Maurice offers excellent daily complimentary fitness classes – circuit training, Pilates, yoga, and aqua gym twice a week. These extras, along with two tennis courts and a proper 25-metre lap pool which is great if you’re looking for a proper workout swim. Private sessions are also available with the excellent trainers – they are popular, so make sure you pre-book. The elegant Constance spa offers a variety of Sisley treatments tailored to your needs, using aromatic natural products inspired by plants from the Indian Ocean and delivered by highly professional therapists. Make sure you book a treatment with Frank the podiatrist at the Brice Nicham studio. He is the best and spends a good hour on your feet.

Book a special Susie Freeman Spa Package, offering 3, 5 or 7 treatments including Sisley massages and a pedicure from Frank, during your stay, at a 30% discount.

5/ Dinarobin Beachcomber

As soon as you enter this eastern-flavoured spa at the foot of Le Morne Mountain, you pick up a spiritual vibe. A Buddha presides over the heated pool, classes are held in a room dripping with Indian textiles and swing beds are nestled in the trees. It is one of the most beautiful spas on the island and the ‘Art of Wellness’ treatments given in air-conditioned cabins, include a Senses Awakening experience, using essential oils. Also unique is energetic coaching with Japanese Makko Ho stretching, Mindfulness Meditation, Respirology and Tibetan Rites.
