THE HOTEL

This 25-villa hotel is centred around a century-old, beautiful renovated pillared manor house. The manor house is at the heart of the hotel giving it a real sense of history and is home to the lobby, restaurant and bar overlooking a large pool and landscaped lawns. Their lawns are dotted with mature trees with troupes of grey langur monkeys who might join you for breakfast!

Uga Ulagalla hotel is located a 45-minute drive south of Anuradhapura, so it is in an ideal location to explore the historic Cultural Triangle’s ancient sites. Set in a private 58-acre estate, it feels extremely tranquil, with manicured gardens and reclaimed paddy fields that border two reservoirs dotted with lotus flowers and majestic kumbuk trees home to over 100 bird species. The setting is distinctly rural with traditional villages and local rice paddies all within walking or pedalling distance.

Service at Ulagalla is excellent and Butlers use golf buggies to whisk you around the resort. There are two bicycles per bungalow (plus a few children’s bikes) for circumnavigating the resort and the app- guided trails through the local village.

The hotel’s enthusiastic naturalist Katarina hosts guests on nature trails, kayaks and jungle drives, and presides over an Elephant Research Centre where they work closely with local experts.

The ratings reflect the comfort, facilities, and amenities you can expect.

Family friendly.

Excellent facilities and activities for both adults and children.

You haven’t tasted Sri Lanka, locals say, until you fully experience an authentic “Kamatha” -
The Kamatha, is their authentic Sri Lankan restaurant set in the centre of a working paddy field. You can sample and watch the preparation of your 15-course dinner which is prepared and served in traditional handmade clay pots and open wood fires at a whole different taste.

The location, which is ideal to explore the culture triangle and local rural areas.

There are bicycles at each villa.

SUSIE RECOMMENDS

Excellent for families. Children love roaming the grounds and enjoying the activities; horse riding, archery, nature walks, lake kayaking and cycling, and taking part in the hotel’s nature-focussed Junior Ranger Course.

Book as many activities that are on offer with Katrina, their naturalist. Whether it’s a safari through the local villages with a breakfast set up by a Lake or a Sundowner by the same lake with the sound of the birds.

Book dinner at Kamatha.

Booking day trips to the Cultural Triangle and have one day rest just enjoying the grounds and peaceful scenery.
