Makweti Safari Lodge, Waterberg

Built into natural rock formations in the craggy Waterberg Mountains, Makweti Safari Lodge lies in the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve, whose pristine mountains, steep gorges, rocky outcrops and open plains offer magnificent game viewing.

The main lodge, commands spectacular views of the Makweti Gorge and with only five secluded thatch and stone suites, decorated with rich woods and antiques, hosts no more than 10 guests at one time.

A member of the invitation-only Chaîne des Rôtisseurs – a hallmark of fine cuisine, Makweti’s African-inspired gourmet cuisine fuses exotic spices from the ancient trade routes with local ingredients and fine South African estate wines and exquisite desserts compliment every dinner. Candlelit gourmet dinners are in a formal dining room or out on the deck overlooking the Makweti Gorge, or in an outdoor boma with a firepit.

There is a swimming pool to enjoy on hot days with multi level decks for sunbathing. Game drives, and morning and evening walking safaris provide a diversity of game experiences, including the largest collection of privately owned white rhino in the world, 16 species of antelope, lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and cheetah as well as the rare brown hyena.

Susie suggests:

  • Couples can book the outdoor Tsala, open on three sides but with reed blinds for privacy for a romantic meal or a relaxing afternoon.
  • Don’t worry if you’re health conscious, the gourmet menu offers a wide selection of choices.
