Ant’s Nest & Ant’s Hill Private Bush Homes, Waterberg

Hosted by Ant Baber and his competent and friendly team, Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill lie on an escarpment looking over the Waterberg Plateau in Limpopo Province, a three hour drive north of Johannesburg.

Lying in a natural amphitheatre, Ant’s Nest is the original colonial-style homestead, with a thatched roof and wide verandahs and a classic African atmosphere. It has a stylish warmth, with furniture made from local fabrics, timber and stone, and rich earthy colours. A 15-metre heated pool is surrounded by extensive lawns and indigenous plants. A wide variety of game frequent the waterhole in front of the house where horses and dogs abound. It’s paradise for children, and one of the most family friendly safari lodges in Africa. Ant’s Nest sleeps 12 people in six bedrooms, so it is ideal for bigger groups looking for exclusivity. During the low season, single rooms can be booked.

Built by Ant on the edge of a cliff next to a waterfall, Ant’s Hill private bush homes has an open and friendly atmosphere and offers breathtaking views across the Waterberg. Cocooned by boulders, the swimming pool cascades over the lip of the gorge, where you can relax for hours.

With spacious rooms and vast folding doors, the thatched lodge blends into the bush while the exotic furniture and brightly coloured African fabrics make it both sophisticated and comfortable. An additional twin room added to the family cottage, means that Ant’s Hill can comfortably sleep 16. It is sold on a non-exclusive basis, allowing single room bookings. Groups of more than six adults can book it exclusively. Also available is ‘World’s View’ cottage at Ant’s Hill, which can accommodate two couples or a family. This stunning cottage has vast indoor and outdoor living areas and a private pool. It also features waterfall and outside showers, a fireplace in the lounge and a large decked verandah to maximize the stunning views.

Both Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill don’t have ‘The Big Five’, but they offer a great African Bush experience, with game viewing from horseback. You can canter along open sandy tracks or traverse high ridges with spectacular vistas. The pace can be as fast or relaxed as you like. A qualified game ranger is on hand to guide you on bush walks or game drives in an open 4×4 land cruiser whenever you wish, using a spotlight at night to find elusive nocturnal animals.

Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill will give your children a life-changing experience. Children of all ages can join their parents on all game viewing activities, and they have special safari activities for children and teenagers, including getting involved in the running of a game ranch.

We have just had the most incredible week at Ant’s Nest, organised by Susie Freeman Travel UK. We were a party of 5 including Granny aged 88 down to 15 year old son and 11 year daughter. We all had a ball, and there were so many highlights from riding with the giraffes and zebras to sundowners with the rhinos. The staff were absolutely delightful and made us feel as if we were part of the family. They even managed to grant Granny’s wish of a gentle horse ride, I think she broke the age record walking past wildebeest and rhino! Our two suites were stunning and the beds were blissfully comfortable. Not to forget the absolutely delicious food, which was very difficult to resist! We will definitely be going back!”
