Leeu House is located on the main street of the enchanting village of Franschhoek, in a valley surrounded by vineyards and spectacular mountain scenery. Beautiful statues of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi (a nod to the owner’s Indian heritage,) greet guests on the front lawn, and art lovers will enjoy the marvellous collection of paintings and pieces of South African contemporary art, scattered throughout the house.
Leeu House has 12 individually decorated rooms and suites, all of which are kitted out with fittings of the very highest quality. Neutral shades and tasteful décor – with natural linens and marble bathrooms with a free-standing bathtub- merge beautifully with the building’s Cape Dutch architecture. Half of the rooms have an outside terrace, and those that don’t can make full use of the hotel’s large manicured garden with plenty of sun loungers and a pool bar.
The small restaurant does not welcome outside guests and as a result it can be very quiet and lacking in atmosphere in the evenings, but there are a huge range of eateries right on the doorstep. Those seeking value-for-money will note that the room rate includes the mini bar, free local telephone calls, laundry service, local spirits, house wines & soft drinks, as well as a complimentary wine tasting from the Muillineux and Leeu Wine Estates.
Leeu House has an excellent large swimming pool where you can relax or do lengths to burn off the extra calories gained from the gourmet cuisine of the Cape Winelands. As a guest at Leeu House you are also offered complimentary transfers to make use of the world-class facilities at the spa and fitness centre at Leeu Estate – where the rooms are twice the price!
- Spend a little extra to stay in one of the rooms with a terrace – a top spot to have a chilled glass of local wine at sunset.
- Eat out in the evening. There is a massive choice of restaurants in Franschhoek, but make sure you book in advance, particularly during high season.
